Nick Cassidy
Formula E Driver for Jaguar TCS Racing for 2024 Season
New Zealander Nick Cassidy first began karting at six years old and has gone on to become a strong talent in motorsport. The Kiwi won his first single seater title at the age of 14 and went on to twice-win the Toyota Racing Series at 18.
In 2015, Nick’s career took him to Japan where he secured the coveted ‘Triple Crown’ of Japanese motorsport titles: Japanese Formula 3 in 2015, Super GT in 2017 and the Super Formula Championship in 2019.
Currently [December 2023] a global brand ambassador for Red Bull, Nick drove his debut season for Red Bull Alpha Tauri AF Corse in DTM in 2022 and won races at both Spa and Spielberg. Nick also raced in the FIA World Endurance Championship for the first time with the AF Corse Team (Ferrari), finishing fourth in the Spa 6-hour race and fifth in Le Mans 24 hours.
Jaguar’s Return to Racing – Formula E
Following Jaguar’s seven wins at Le Mans in the 1950s and 1988 and 1990, they re-entered racing with a team for the Formula 1 championship for the five seasons from 2000 to 2004. Having achieved very little, Jaguar’s then parent company, Ford, decided to sell the team which took the name of one of its main sponsors – Red Bull.
On 15 December 2015 Jaguar announced its return to global motorsport with plans to enter the third season of the exciting FIA Formula E Championship as a manufacturer with its own team. FIA Formula E is the world’s first global single-seater championship for electric powered cars and offered a unique opportunity for Jaguar Land Rover to further the development of EV powertrain including motor and battery technology.
Jaguar’s chosen Technical Partner was Williams Advanced Engineering who would provide extensive motorsport knowledge, combined with high performance EV Systems experience and success. Jaguar Land Rover had a long term relationship with Williams, who partnered with Jaguar on the development of the Jaguar C-X75 hybrid concept car. On 8 September 2016 Jaguar announced the team’s official name, with Panasonic as title sponsor, its driver line-up of Adam Carroll, Mitch Evans and Ho-Pin Tung as reserve driver, and launched their electric racing livery. Jaguar’s first all-electric racing car in history, the I-TYPE 1, was launched at the Jaguar Collections Centre, making a dramatic debut driven by Ho-Pin Tung, and outlining the brand’s commitment to ‘Race To Innovate’ – a mission to change the perception of electric vehicles, to develop new electric technology and to inspire future generations.
Nick Cassidy’s Early Career
Nick Cassidy was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1994 and like Mitch Evans first began karting at six years old and midget races from age eight, and has gone on to become a strong talent in motorsport.
Cassidy has been racing in the formula racing series since 2008. After driving in Formula First he joined the Formula Ford championships in New Zealand and Australia. In 2009, Cassidy was runner-up in the New Zealand Formula First Championship, and in 2010, he was runner-up in the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship. Both times, he was named Rookie of the year.
In 2011 he drove for Giles Motorsport, in the Toyota Racing Series. After five podium finishes, he won two of three races on the last race weekend. He was named Rookie of the Year and finished as runner up behind his team mate Mitch Evans.
He competed in a few races in the Australian Formula Ford Championship and then in five races in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series. In 2012, Cassidy participated in the Toyota Racing Series again, remaining with Giles Motorsport.
In 2018 he finished second in both Super Formula and Super GT, and then in 2019 he completed the ‘triple crown’ in Japanese motorsport by winning the Super Formula title.
Formula E Racing
Cassidy made his Formula E debut in the 2020/21 Formula E season for Envision Virgin Racing, replacing Sam Bird who moved to Jaguar. He also made his debut in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters for a combined entry of AF Corse and Red Bull Racing, replacing Red Bull Racing Reserve Driver Alex Albon in the final round of the 2021 season at the Norisring, Nuremberg, Germany. For the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons Envision Virgin Racing used Aude E-Tron FE07 cars. In the 2022 season, Nick had his first victory at the New York E-Prix, a podium in London, and finished eleventh in the Drivers’ Championship.
For the 2022/23 season Envision became a Jaguar ‘Customer’ team using the I-TYPE 6 cars, the same as Jaguar TCS Racing. That season was Cassidy’s most successful to date, becoming Runner-Up in the Drivers’ World Championship and securing 4 Wins, 8 Podiums and 1 Pole position. Nick was also instrumental in winning the Teams’ World Championship for Envision Racing.
Nick Cassidy joins Jaguar TCS Racing for the 2024 season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, racing alongside teammate and fellow New Zealander Mitch Evans.
